Dialogues of the Carmelites
by Francis Poulenc

Opera
An opera about the Martyrs of Compiègne, Carmelite nuns who, in 1794 during the closing days of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, were guillotined in Paris for refusing to renounce their vocation.
The visual design concept for Dialogues of the Carmelites is minimalism. This story of faith is told with minimalistic scenery. The lighting design approaches the visual through an expressionistic aesthetics. The design focuses primarily on the atmosphere of scenes and the expression of the character emotions. The consideration for the objective time of day and locations are secondary elements visually.
